3 more science and technology universities awaiting approval
At present there are a total of 107 private universities in the country including 62 in Dhaka alone. However, there are 97 active universities. Out of those, 12 are science and technology universities. Even after getting the approval, the activities of 10 other universities did not start yet due to various complications.
This time, 107 applications have been submitted for establishing new universities to the Ministry of Education. Of these, the approval processes of 15 universities have been started. And 3 of those are for universities of science and technology. Among these universities, an entrepreneur named Abu Noman Hawladar has applied for a university in Dhaka called 'University of Modern Technology'.
According to sources, this person is an engineer. A one-time student of BUET's mechanical engineering department, he is the chairman of BBS Cables and the founder of Nahi Group.
Among the other two universities, one is in Sylhet and the other is in Chandpur.
The university in Chandpur has been named 'Apollo University of Science and Technology'. Former Awami League MP Shamsul Alam Bhuiyan has applied for the university.
An entrepreneur named Ahmed Al Kabir has applied for setting up a 'University of Technology' in Sylhet. He is the main sponsor of the voluntary organization Simantik and the founder of Research Training and Management (RTM) International. Although the academic activities initially started at the RTM Complex in the TB Gate area of the city, the permanent campus of the university will be located at Bangabandhu Hi-Tech Park in Kompaniganj.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already sent a report to the ministry after inspections of the three universities. Confirming the receipt of the report, Additional Secretary (University) of the Ministry of Education Abu Yusuf Mia said the inspection reports have been sent to the Prime Minister's Office. If there is consent for approval from there, they will be approved.
It may be noted that, private universities are approved under the Private University Act-2010. Entrepreneurs have to submit an application to the Ministry of Education for approval. The UGC inspection reports are submitted on the basis of the application and final approval comes from the Prime Minister's Office.
